English
KS4
All students will take the new English Language and English Literature GCSEs. These are new qualifications designed to inspire and motivate students, providing appropriate academic challenge whilst ensuring that the assessment and texts are, as far as possible, accessible to all students. These qualifications will be graded under the new 1-9 system.
Students at Key Stage four will follow courses in English and English Literature. The courses are taught together and successful students will achieve two separate GCSEs - English and English Literature.
Students’ work for GCSE English and English Literature will be assessed entirely through final examinations taken at the end of Year 11. Throughout the two years we will be ensuring that students are well prepared for their examinations at the end of the course; therefore many of our assessments will be completed in timed exam conditions to prepare students for the rigours of the final GCSE examinations.
English Language
Two examinations - 100% weighting of GCSE
The English Language GCSE will provide all students with a robust foundation of reading and good written English, and with the language and literary skills which are required for further study and work. It will ensure that students can read fluently and write effectively, and will have 20% of the marks awarded for accurate spelling, punctuation and grammar. It will also encourage the study of literature, with students reading high-quality texts across a range of genres and periods.
English Literature
Two examinations - 100% weighting of GCSE
The English Literature GCSE will encourage students to read, write and think critically. It will involve students studying a range of intellectually challenging and substantial whole texts in detail, including Shakespeare, 19th-century novels, Romantic poetry and other high-quality fiction and drama. The new GCSE will also ensure that all students are examined on some ‘unseen’ texts, encouraging students to read widely and rewarding those that can demonstrate the breadth of their understanding.
Speaking and Listening - separate endorsement (0% weighting of GCSE)
Students will also be assessed in Speaking and Listening and will take part in regular, assessed activities, including a formal presentation with a small audience of peers and teachers. Please note that while their speaking and listening skills will be assessed separately from the reading and writing components of the course, students will be awarded a certificate to illustrate their capability in this area of English.
