Assessment and Reporting at South Chingford Foundation School
Our Approach to Assessment
Assessment at SCFS is designed to support learning, track progress, and prepare students for success. It reflects our school values of Achievement, Resilience, and Unity, ensuring that every student is challenged and supported to reach their full potential.
We use assessment to:
- Identify strengths and areas for improvement.
- Provide meaningful feedback that students act upon.
- Build resilience by gradually increasing challenge across Key Stages.
Flight Paths Explained
From Year 7, students are placed on an aspirational flight path based on prior attainment and baseline assessments. Flight paths help us measure progress and set high expectations:
- Excelling – working above age-related expectations
- Secure – meeting age-related expectations
- Developing Towards – building knowledge and skills toward expectations
Flight paths link to GCSE target ranges, but there is no cap on achievement students can always exceed their flight path.
Assessment at Key Stage 3
Students complete a structured programme of assessments throughout the year:
- Baseline Assessments in English, Maths, and Science at the start of Year 7.
- Mid-Unit Core Tasks to check understanding.
- End-of-Unit Assessments in every subject.
- Reading Age Tests to monitor literacy development.
- End-of-Year Tests in all subjects.
- Pre-Public Exams (PPEs) in Year 9 to prepare for GCSE-style assessments.
Subjects provide revision resources such as:
- Knowledge organisers
- Personalised learning checklists
- Success criteria
Key Stage 3 Assessment and Reporting Framework
Assessment at Key Stage 4
GCSE assessment follows exam board specifications. Students sit formal exams at the end of Year 11, supported by:
- Regular topic tests
- Mock exams
- Non-exam assessments (NEAs) in practical subjects
Reporting to Parents
We report progress three times per year:
- One Parents’ Evening
- One Report Card
- One End-of-Year Report
Reports include:
- Current attainment against flight path
- Engagement and behaviour grades (Excellent, Good, Improvement Needed, Inadequate)
Supporting Success
We expect all students to be 100% Ready to Learn:
Punctual, equipped, engaged, and respectful.
Teachers use feedback to help students close gaps and stretch their learning. Interventions, revision sessions, and enrichment opportunities ensure every student has the tools to succeed.
